The
Middle Colonies of the United States were Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey
and New York. They combined features of
both New England (to the North) and also of the South. The
Middle Colonies have rich soil,
a good growing season, and a large number of rivers. Within them, trade and manufacturing were developed. Towns and cities grew more rapidly than in the South.
The best-known resident of the Middle Colonies was Benjamin Franklin. He was born in Boston in 1706. Franklin was the fifteenth child in his family. His father was a candle maker who worked long hours in order to care for his family. Franklin became a printer apprentice in a print shop at the age of twelve. Five years later, he left to make his way in the world. He went to Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. He had a little money. He went to work for a printer. Later he set up his own printing shop.
He published a book called, "Poor Richard’s Almanac". His book was an important publication in forming the United States. He became a very important man in his community.
