AN IMPORTANT CITIZEN
AN IMPORTANT CITIZEN
Benjamin
Franklin worked hard to make his printing shop a success. Later he
retired at age 42 and did other things.
He invented an iron stove, known as the Franklin stove. He
experimented with electricity by flying a kite in a thunderstorm. Lightning struck the kite and passed down the
wire to a key at the end, causing a spark. This proved that lightning
was electricity. It led to the invention of the lightning rod.
Franklin also did many things for Philadelphia, where he lived. He organized a fire department and convinced City leaders to pave the streets. He helped establish the City’s first public library. Franklin's life showed that with hard work, a person could rise from humble beginnings to become wealthy and famous. Franklin became a model of hard-working people interested in personal achievement and success.
Franklin was also a diplomat in France after the American Revolution and one of the Founding Fathers of the Constitutional Convention.
