“JUST BE
THERE”
(Written on

When mom
was really sick in nineteen eight two,
I called up
her doctor to see what little ole’ me could do.
The doctor
said (knowing mom had a progressive cancer),
“Just be
with her,
Just be with her,
Just be with her”, over and over,
And that is
what I did.
My son was
just a baby, I was kind of in a trance, couldn’t react.
Now, thirty
six years older, with age threatening many of us,
I think,
“And if I sing a song,
Get the ill
to sing along,
Read them a
poem, or tell a joke;
What if I
make a skit?
Play my
guitar;
Get
everybody to make a wish on a faraway star?
Could bake
some food or some bread; create a feast;
Dance or
play games; to ward off that ugly mean beast!
Listen to
what others have said;
Like my sister-in-law
who is walking the last mile,
Who said,
“At least I can still smile”!
Or like dad
said before he passed in two thousand nine,
“I can
still breath” as his playful eyes continued to shine!
Could bake
some food or some bread; create a feast;
Dance or
play games; to ward off that ugly mean beast!
