EL REINO DE LAS HORMIGAS

La hormiga cortadora de hojas, o ¨sauva¨ (como está denominada en Brasil) es uno de los insectos más abundantes y notables de la zona trópico del nuevo mundo.  Con la posible excepción de algunas termitas tropicales, ellas han evolucionado la habilidad de cosechar hongos de la vegetación fresca.
De esta forma, trabajadores especializados están expedidos para coleccionar vegetación, mientras la mayoría de la población se mantiene seguros en refugio bajo tierra.

Hay 38 especies diferentes de cortadores y dominan una gran parte del trópico americano.  Consumen más vegetación que cualquier otro grupo comparable de animales, incluyendo formas más abundantes de orugas, saltamontes, pájaros y mamíferos.  Una colonia individual puede desmontar un árbol de naranja o parcela de porotos durante una sola noche, y poblaciones combinadas causan más que un billón de dólares de daño cada año.  ¡Con buena razón los colonizadores portugueses apodaron a Brasil, "El Reino de las Hormigas"!

THE KINGDOM OF THE ANTS

The leafcutter ant or ¨sauva¨, as it is called locally in Brazil, is one of the most abundant and visually striking insects of the New World Tropics.  With the possible exception of a few tropical termites, they alone have evolved the ability to turn fresh vegetation into mushrooms.  Thus, specialized workers can be sent to collect vegetation while the bulk of the populations are safe in subterranean retreats.
 
There are 38 different species of leaf cutters and they dominate a large part of the American Tropics.  They consume more vegetation than any other comparable group of animals, including the more abundant forms of caterpillars, grasshoppers, birds and mammals.  A single colony can strip an orange tree or bean patch overnight, and the combined populations inflict more than a billion dollars' worth of damage yearly.  It was with good reason that the early Portuguese settlers called Brazil the Kingdom of the Ants!
