No. 8
THE SALON
Edouard Manet lived from 1832 until 1883. He was a painter, critic, collector and spectator of the art scene.
He painted the world around him as he saw it and enjoyed it. He once declared, “we must be of our time and work with what we see". This became the guiding principle of his art. Manet was a man without financial problems. He was not exactly a family man. He married his piano teacher, after producing a son with her. Manet loved good living and could afford it. He led a life of Paris, theaters cabarets, races, pretty women, dinners in fine houses, with a variety of good friends and the adulation of young artists. It was the good life.
His art work was not always accepted in the "art scene" of Paris, an entity called the Salon. This caused great concern to him throughout his career. The Salon was an annual exhibition of the French Academy.
Questions:
1. Describe Edouard Manet.
2. What was the Salon?
3. Do you like to paint or draw?
4. What did Edouard Manet paint?
5. What did he say about painting?
